Stick n' Snaps

Stick n' Snaps is a toy meant to foster age-appropriate play. As a target user group, I chose children between the ages of 3-4. During these years, children usually engage in parallel play which starts at 2+ years of age. But at ages 3-4, they make the switch to associative play, where they start to interact more with others. This means that the design solution for this age range would have to be suitable for both associative and parallel play. Additionally, at this age children are preparing for dressing independently. As such,  I wanted to make the product adjacent to this upcoming milestone, as well as promote fine motor skills/ finger dexterity. This is also meant to be open-ended, as there is no clear objective as to what should be made with the toy.

For this project I did a small-scale scoping review, environmental scan, must/shoulds/coulds, ideation, several prototyping iterations, CAD modeling, laser cut files, General Assembly drawings, and storyboarding.

The results were building blocks, which could be flat-packed and reformed. They would come in three varieties, one with Velcro, one with snaps, and one mixed. This is intended so that if there is parallel play, two children can use them independently while still sharing the toy. And in the case of associative play, they could choose to join the structures they have created using the mixed cubes.
